It's a lot more expensive than a half-price upgrade to ST4, but Omnisphere, the expansions that are continually being released for it, and the fact that it's a synthesizer, are more in tune with my specific needs. At 260 GB, I'd no doubt find every sound I'd want for my pop productions, but at the cost of filling my hard drive up with 259 GB of samples I'd never use. This is why I have not upgraded to ST4 Max. IK Multimedia SampleTank 4 has been re-designed from the ground up to be every musicians go to workstation for music creation, with a completely new. I own a lot of deeply-sampled, dedicated libraries for horns, guitars, orchestral, ethnic, and other acoustic instruments, so it's very unlikely I'd use SampleTank or any other all-in-one library for those purposes. Besides this, they introduced a new SampleTank 4 CS (Custom Shop), a free version for PC and Mac that offers more than 4GB of sound content plus all editing features and effects of the full software. SampleTank 4 CS features 50 Instruments, with over 4 GB of sound content. On top of this, they released 6 new libraries for ST4.
It's for that reason that a SampleTank Max library is like the Omnisphere of romplers. Besides this, they introduced a new SampleTank 4 CS (Custom Shop), a free version for PC and Mac that offers more than 4GB of sound content plus all editing features and effects of the full software. Sometimes I just need a certain sound, and SampleTank will have it. It always finds its way into all of my pop-oriented productions, often working alongside various soft synths. The best parts of ST are still the best parts of version 2.5, namely the Mellotron library and the Stretch algorithm. I have SampleTank 2.5 XL (which I guess is the equivalent of "ST2 Max") which I play through the ST3 engine. Library sounds utterly unconvincing, especially by today's standards.
